CN Power maintains winning streak, Gores triumph over Dolls

Last Saturday at the Bunker marked the third ToRD double header of 2012. The night kicked off with our all star team CN Power, riding high on a home turf winning streak, challenging the QCRG Lake Effect Furies. These two teams have played each other once a year for the past 3 years, with the Furies taking the win in 2010, and CN Power in 2011. The sanctioned WFTDA bout showcased an excellent display of derby skill and stragety; both teams have improved year-over and were working hard to be the victor, but there can only be one.

Final Score: 184 CN Power – 92 Lake Effect Furies.

You can watch the bout in HD over at Layer9, maintained by our favorite videographer, Mr. Force. Click here to read the Derby Nerd’s recap and analysis of the bout.

Following the CN Power bout and an excellent halftime show by Ronley Teper’s Lipliners, the Gore Gore Rollergirls and the Death Track Dolls hit the track for their second bout of the year. The Gores previous game resulted in a close loss to the 2011 champions the Chicks Ahoy, while the Dolls were entering after a narrow win over the Smoke City Betties. Would the streaks continue for both teams? If you don’t want me to spoil the outcome, you can head on over Vimeo via Layer9 to watch Period 1 and Period 2. If you want spoilers, keep reading!

Building on a solid roster of skaters that have at least one bouting year of experience on their belts, the Gores took the lead early on in the bout. The Dolls roster saw many of their new rookies get track time, with the fresh blood put to good use maintaining solid walls and busting out points. The Gores dominated the first half of the bout, ending it with a 79-35 lead over the Dolls at halftime. After the break, the Dolls began to close the gap on the Gores, capitalizing on power jam opportunities to rack up points for themselves.

Final Score: 131 Gores – 91 Dolls

Head on over to read the Derby Nerd’s review of the bout.

Don’t you just love watching roller derby on TV? Well guess what? The amazing team at Rogers TV came to the bout on Saturday to film the Gores vs. Dolls bout. Complete with commentary & wicked score tracking, the game will air on Rogers TV (cable 10/63) on Saturday April 28th at 8pm. Hit up our page on Rogers TV for more details & show them your appreciation by tweeting @RogersTVToronto or via hashtag #RogersTV to keep roller derby coming to the comfort of your living room!

Next weekend we’re all gone to dominate Beast of the East 2012, hosted by Montreal Roller Derby, but we’ll be back on May 12th for a double header that sees the DVAS take on the Kingston Derby Girls Disloyalists, and the Smoke City Betties vs. the Chicks Ahoy!

CNP FTW, Dolls post a tight win over the Betties

Last Saturday at the Bunker we held our season double header, aka Season Opener pt 2. The night opened up with our all-star team in pink, CN Power (#17 North Central), challenging the Roc Stars from Roc City (Rochester, #17 East). The bout started off close, with several lead changes in the first half. This was the second CN Power bout of 2012; two weeks previously they posted an impressive win over the higher ranked Fort Wayne (#14 North Central). Building on a solid training foundation that the team has been working on for over a year, CN Power began to pull ahead and took the victory at home.

Final Score: 171 – 108 for CN Power.

After a brief intermission, the Betties and Dolls hit the track. Both teams were sporting rosters including many of their rookie skaters; although you wouldn’t be able to tell from how they played that night. Signs were evident early on that this would be a bout to watch; though the Dolls grabbed first points, the Betties quickly answered. Point leader would trade back and forth between the two teams all night long, as the jammers and packs fought for victory. At the half, the Betties were up 58 – 52; the first half time advantage they had seen in a home game in 2 years.

The second half saw hard hits (and penalties) start flying. The score stayed tight, the lead switching back and forth, and no clear winner was evident until the very end. In the final few minutes of the period, the Dolls pulled ahead 20 points on the Betties. In the remaining few jams, the Betties would hold the Dolls from scoring and add a few points, bringing the score closer, but not upsetting the Dolls lead.

Final Score: 115 – 100 for the Death Track Dolls

Click here for the Derby Nerd’s weekend recap, and visit our YouTube channel for HD footage of CN Power vs Roc Stars. The CityNews bout recap cap of Dolls vs Betties can be seen here. Photos from both bouts can be see on our Flickr group.

Big thanks to Roc City, all the visiting refs and NSOs, catl for providing awesome halftime music, and our fans for coming out (and building a really sweet beeramid!). So far 2012 has been a year of exciting home team bouts for ToRD, with our first two bouts having really close scores. Our next project is Quad City Chaos, returning for it’s 3rd year, running the Mar 31 – Apr 1 at Downsview Park. The following teams are participating this year: CN Power, Tri City Thunder, Rideau Valley Vixens, and the Hammer City Eh! Team.

Single day & weekend passes will be on sale soon online & in stores. Stay tuned! Our next home bout takes place on April 14th, when the Death Track Dolls challenge the Gore Gore Rollergirls!
